Dive into our full history

The Genesis in a Changing World (1990–2001)

EUROAVIA Dresden’s story is deeply intertwined with the transformation of Europe. The spark was ignited in 1990, just as Germany stood on the cusp of reunification, when proactive students from West Berlin’s Technical University reached out to their Eastern counterparts. This unprecedented academic cooperation led to the formation of a provisional group in Dresden, led by our inaugural president, Torsten Balwinski. We swiftly made history by becoming the very first EUROAVIA group in the former Soviet Bloc. By May 5th, 1994, we officially evolved into a registered nonprofit organization under our first president, Michael Künzel.

However, the early years tested our resilience. In 1992, the University for Traffic and Transport Engineering was integrated into TU Dresden, which resulted in the dissolution of the Institute for Aviation and Air Traffic. This structural shift caused a severe decline in academic support and membership. But EUROAVIA Dresden refused to fade.

Revival and Steady Growth (2001–Present)

The turning point came in 2001. Driven by the dedication of Wiebke Woitschach and Robert Krüger, and supported by the reassignment of the professorship for Technology and Logistics in Air Traffic to Prof. Dr. Hartmut Fricke, the local group found new vigor. We expanded our presence within the international network and firmly established ourselves at European events.

Throughout the 2010s, we maintained a highly stable and active community, hosting major international Fly-Ins in 2016 and 2022, and organizing regular field trips to other Affiliated Societies across Europe.

Forging Ahead

While the global Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 temporarily grounded our physical and international events, it could not stop our momentum. We adapted and emerged stronger. In 2023, the Air Transport and Logistics Master’s program shifted to entirely English instruction, a change that attracted a massive surge of active, international talent to our ranks. Today, standing as the proud hosts of the Annual Meeting of the EUROAVIA Congress (AMEAC) 2026, EUROAVIA Dresden remains a testament to resilience, international cooperation, and a shared passion for aerospace.
